New DVIRC Training Calendar for 2008
The DVIRC training calendar for January to June 2008 is now available. Go to our training page on DVIRC's website to view the training calendar and to download a registration form.

Family Violence Training for Social Workers
DVIRC is for the first time providing training specifically aimed at Social Workers who work with clients affected by family violence. This training will provide the opportunity to accrue Continuing Professional Education (CPE) points. For details on the first two of the AASW Continuing Professional Development Series please download our training calendar (pdf).

DVIRC Wins New Training Contract
DVIRC in partnership with Swinburne University has been successful in winning a contract with the Victorian Department of Human Services to deliver training programs and conduct practice forums on the issue of violence against women with disabilities. The programs will be delivered in the Hume and Southern regions. Information about the programs will be available through the regional networks.

The latest DVIRC Quarterly, released in February, features an article on DVIRC’s twenty-first birthday by Vig Geddes, a reflective piece by retired DVIRC trainer, Nancy Corbett, on the issues women face, a report by Belinda Morris on the public forum on Blaming and Reclaiming Culture, an article by Chris Jennings on the use of sole occupancy orders in supporting women with disabilities, an update on the Partners in Prevention project by Kiri Bear, and all of the regular columns.

bookNew Guide for Disability Workers: ‘Getting Safe Against the Odds’

AVAILABLE SOON

A guide for service providers in the family violence and disabilities fields on supporting women with disabilities experiencing family violence will soon be available. This guide is based on learnings gathered from interviewing women with disabilities about their personal experiences of surviving violence. It contains practical tips based on the actual accounts of the women’s experiences.

Keep an eye out for the guide which will be released in coming weeks on the DVIRC website at www.dvirc.org.au

New Code of Practice in Victoria

As a key partner in the new integrated approach to family violence involving the police, courts, justice and service sector, the Federation of Community Legal Centres has released a Code of Practice for Family Violence Court Based (Applicant) Programs.

The Code of Practice is a welcome addition to the current protocols that guide best practice by the key agencies that respond to family violence. In particular, this Code of Practice will act as a resource for the Federation of Community Legal Centres’ family violence lawyers and other program staff in their work with those affected by family violence.

scalesNew Family Violence Bill

The new Family Violence Bill is still being finalised following extensive feedback from stakeholders. A number of important issues are still being considered, and the Victorian Government has undertaken to consult further on changes to the draft in coming months.

Launch of Practice Guidelines at Half-day Forum

A half-day forum is being held at Function Hall, Jasper Hotel, 489 Elizabeth Street Melbourne on Friday 29 February from 9.00 am to 12.30pm to launch some new practice guidelines on women and children’s family violence counselling and support programs. It will include a survivor’s view of counselling in addition to panel discussions with Professor Cathy Humphreys, Robyn Miller, and Jo Howard.
