February Network Meeting: Engaging with Best Practice

Our February PiP meeting will be a facilitated discussion of best practice and the recently released Respectful Relationships Education in Secondary Schools report. In particular we will be looking at the 5 criteria for good practice outlined in chapter 3. Please visit the PiP blog for some food for thought about the limitations of best practice as a concept.

The February meeting will also feature a presentation on the eagerly anticipated DEECD demonstration project keep an eye on the PiP bulletin for further details.

    The December 2009 network meeting looked at the recently released state government plan to prevent violence against women, A Right to Respect, with particular focus on the education setting. Lara Fergus from the Office of Women's Policy gave an overview of the state plan (download Lara's power point presentation). Then David Billimoria and Erika Turner spoke to the Department of Education and Early Childhood's plans in response to the Respectful Relationships Education in Schools report download meeting notes (pdf 95kb)

    The September 2009 network meeting improved participant's capacity to engage with the media. Featuring insights from Jane Ashton (Women's Domestic Violence Crisis Service) on the Media Advocacy Project.     The June 2009 network meeting offered an opportunity to learn and reflect on our ability to work with young people with disabilities. The statistics show that this is a group that is particularly vulnerable to interpersonal violence. How can we extend our violence prevention practice to include people of all abilities?     The March 2009 meeting included discussion of a couple of recent, highly publicised incidents and presentations from Lara Fergus (Office of Women's Policy) and Steven O'Connor (Department of Education and Early Childhood Development) download meeting notes (pdf 118kb).

    December 2008's meeting looked at the connections between relationship violence prevention and sexual health education. Presentations from Shelley Walker, Knox Community Health, Youth 'KISS' research project download powerpoint (1,113kb) and Lucy Forwood, Women's Health West 'Girls talk, Guys talk' download summary (pdf 182kb). There was also a broad discussion of current developments within the sector at the beginning of the meeting download notes (pdf 136kb).

    August 2008's meeting featured a workshop on Creating Change with Dr Sue Dyson from ARCSHS (Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society). Download presentation (ppt 1,577kb)

    June 2008's meeting focused on self-care and vicarious trauma for violence prevention workers and an evaluation of the first year of Partners in Prevention. Download notes (pdf 43kb)

    February 2008's meeting focused on a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis of youth violence prevention in Victoria and sharing information about our work (see notes for details).
