How can I help a friend or a family member? |
What Happened:I just started dating my boyfriend, but he acts like we are married. He told me I couldn't see my ex-boyfriend, who is a really good friend of mine, anymore. I didn't get the point that he was controlling until he said I couldn't see my dad anymore, and that is when I knew I had to get out and fast. I started hanging out with friends and one night he came home from work and I was not home. He threw my stuff out and told my mother he was going to kill me because I did not cook him dinner. When I did come home he threw me down the steps. How I coped:I moved out and I now live on my own. I have more confidence now and I realize it is not a good idea to move in with him.We are getting along and going to a counsellor who talks to us about abuse. How the situation changed:He does not tell me what to do anymore and he respects me. He stopped blaming stuff on me. What helped me to get stronger:With the help of my friends and family I have been able to move on.We are still together. Just not in the same house for my protection, along with his own. What I would say to someone who is being abused:Get out before it is to late and you really get hurt. You can't make it with a person who does not respect you. Next Story I Advice I Stories Menu |home
