How can I help a friend or a family member?

Healthy relationships

Sex & Trust

Self-esteem

If you are abusive

What Happened:

I went out with my ex-boyfriend for about 2 months. When I first met him, he seemed so nice, like he would never hurt anyone, but that was before the abuse started. One evening, at my friend's house, he got angry with me for talking to another guy while I was on vacation. He picked me up, and threw me on the ground (a concrete floor) of her basement, on my head. Another time, he shoved me down the stairs. He would push me up against walls, slap me arms and legs, and yell at me. He called me all sorts of names, and nasty things. This went on for a while, until I finally figured out what I was doing to myself, and I broke up with him. When I broke up with him, he called me a few times, threatening to kill me, or do things to my friends. Thankfully, he left me alone after that.

How I coped:

I talked to my friend until I broke up with him.

How the situation changed:

It only got worse as time went on.

What helped me to get stronger:

My friends, my new boyfriend.

What I would say to someone who is being abused:

Get out. You don't need to be through this. You don't deserve the crap they put you through.
